You know, Astrid is always looking for ways to make Berk safer. I think if we set up a lookout spot out in the ocean, we could keep an eye out for Berserker ships. Great idea, right?

So Hookfang and I flew out into the ocean and found the perfect place. Any ships heading to Berk or the School of Dragons needs to pass by these sea stacks, so we'll spot them long before they are a threat to us.

Also, it's a really beautiful place.

I think you'll understand how great it is when you see it. Besides, I need your help to set up Hiccup's telescope to see the ships. Fly out through the crack in the caldera and fly straight towards the ocean. I'll meet you there!

1- Fly to Snotlout's vantage point through the caldera

[you are teleported to Snotlout's Sentry Station]

Good! It's a bit hard flying without daylight, but you seem to be handling it just fine.

Welcome to Snotlout's Sentry Station! Let me show you around.
Do you see the cresting water on the surface of the ocean? Fly down there and meet the animals!

2- Look at the narwhals in the water

Snotlout

Narwhals! They're so happy to see us! Pretty cool, huh?

Oh, what about the perfect view? We have a great look of the ocean and an amazing view of that island on the horizon. You should take a closer look!

3- Look at the caldera in the horizon

See? This is the perfect place! I do know what I'm doing. I know, it's incredible.

4- Talk to Snotlout

Oh, shoot! I just knocked the telescope into the water! It sank so quickly.
Now there's no telescope. You've got to help me, [Your Viking's Name]! Please!

Could you tell Hiccup we need a new telescope? I would do it myself, but I'm busy ... um ... looking out for Berserker ships! Gotta keep the school safe, and all. Tell Astrid I'm on the job!

5- Talk to Hiccup at the school

Snotlout lost the telescope on accident? In the ocean?! That sounds, well, just like him.

Luckily, I was already thinking about replacing it! Our recent experiments with lenses gave me some interesting ideas. Here's the latest prototype!

This telescope is slightly bigger and more powerful. It uses a concave lens as the eyepiece and a convex lens as the objective lens - the lens that is farther away from you. The image is magnified through the lenses. We'll be able to look at things that are even farther away.

Snotlout did have a good idea. A vantage point in the ocean will help us spot danger before it reaches Berk. Will you take this new telescope to him?

6- Replace the telescope at Snotlout's Sentry Station

Snotlout

You got Hiccup to replace the telescope? Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Tap on the telescope and look on the horizon for Berserker ships, [Your Viking's Name].

7- Use the telescope to look for Berserkers

Snotlout

No ships and you can see for miles around. Our experiment is a success! You and I make a great team!

Hey, [Your Viking's Name]. I thought I could come out and see how the new telescope worked. I'm glad it was a success!

You know, this view is really great. There are fewer lights from the school and you can see more stars. Since we're here, maybe we can use the telescope to get a closer look at the moon.

The moon goes through different phases. We Vikings know the different phases of the moon very well. We use them to keep track of the time of year. Let's see what phase the moon is in right now.

8- Use the telescope to look at the moon

Hiccup

That's a waxing crescent moon. During this phase, only part of the moon is beginning to show. We say that the moon is 'waxing' because the moon becomes a bit more visible for a little bit longer each passing night.

The moon goes through eight phases as it circles around the Earth, once every 29.5 days.

Oh, you guys made the telescope better than before ... all thanks to me? That's awesome! If I hadn't lost the lens, Hiccup wouldn't have thought of making improvements. Uh, you're welcome!

Losing the telescope wasn't exactly helpful, Snotlout. We should try to find it at some point. But for now, I'm glad the new telescope worked out. Thanks for your help, [Your Viking's Name].

Known Glitches[]

Solution: Go to the Lookout and click on the telescope there. This can work for steps 7 and 8, however it won't trigger the final dialogue from Hiccup. Instead, an additional step "Enjoy the Sentry Station" will appear, and the player will find out that they can't reach again the sentry station.

  • PROBLEM: If the player leave the Sentry Station during the quest, they can't go back to it. The portal through the crack in the calder will no longer work, the quest arrow will point to a point inside the crack, but nothing will happen when reached. The world map will show an X in the sea near the Berk island, but it can't be clicked.

Solution: There is no currently solution to this. This is a problem known for years, and reported several times to the admins in the SoD forum, but there are no reports that it has been fixed in any of the affected accounts. The quest will then stay in the book forever, as it can't be finished. As for v2.12, the location has been added to the map, allowing an easier way to access it, fixing the glitch.

Previously to the introduction of the general World Map, this glitch could be bypassed by flying out to the sea in any location, until the old list of location would appear. The Sentry Station location was listed there, and could be accessed this way.
