This is the second thing you'll do after starting up a Viking profile, right after you've gone through customizing and naming your character.

Personality testEdit

It may not reflect the dragon you want, but Valka will ask you to take a personality test to decipher which dragon species would be the best for you. Each answer you give is an attribute to the dragon species itself.

Once you've found out which species is the one you want, you get to choose your dragon.

How to choose your dragonEdit

If you are stuck on which dragon to choose, even after the test, here are a few things you can do:

  1. Watch the HTTYD movie, which gives you a better idea of each dragon and its traits.
  2. Decide on if you want a wyvern or a four-legged dragon.
  3. Look around at other peoples' dragons.
  4. If you're really stuck between two, do a poll.

If you're still stuck, consider some of the pros and cons of each dragon:

Accessible to everyone Edit

Monstrous NightmareEdit

Pros:

  • Easy to use in battles.
  • Good top flight speed.
  • Has a nice base pattern to work with.
  • Ties with the Nadder for being the hardest of the non-member starter dragons to obtain.

Cons:

  • Can look a bit sluggish in the air.
  • Only light base colours work with the dark pattern.
  • Is a big dragon, making it harder to steer.
  • Low acceleration for flight.

Deadly NadderEdit

Pros:

  • Easy to use in battles.
  • Useful for a high number of Stable Missions.
  • Ties with the Nightmare for being the hardest of the non-member starter dragons to obtain.

Cons:

  • They are very popular--if you're looking to be original the Nadder is not the way to go.
  • Low max speed and acceleration for flight.

Hideous ZipplebackEdit

Pros:

  • Not a very commonly-chosen starter dragon.
  • Two heads, which make for interesting times.

Cons:

  • They are big and harder to steer.
  • The second-easiest starter dragon to obtain.

GronckleEdit

Pros:

  • Small and easy to steer.
  • High acceleration for flight.
  • Useful for a high number of Stable Missions, including at least one that awards gems as part of its prize.
  • Not a very commonly-chosen starter.
  • Needed for one of the basic (non-expansion) quests.
  • Used in a Gronckle specific quest so you do not have to purchase one later on.

Cons:

  • Low max speed and acceleration for flight.
  • The easiest starter dragon to obtain.

Member-only Starter Dragons Edit

ThunderdrumEdit

Pros:

  • Not a commonly-chosen starter dragon.
  • Useful for multiple Stable Missions that award gems as part of the prize.
  • Good top flight speed.

Cons:

  • Can be won from 170 or 250 coin chests at about the same rate as the non-member starter dragons.
  • Ties with the Whispering Death for being the cheapest of the member-only starter dragons to obtain at a cost of 300 gems (240 for members).
  • Low acceleration for flight.

Whispering DeathEdit

Pros:

  • Not a commonly-chosen starter dragon.
  • Useful for at least one Stable Mission that awards gems as part of its prize.

Cons:

  • Can be obtained for free through the non-expansion quest "Explore The Dark Depths".
  • Also shows up in the 170 and 250 coin chests at a lower frequency than the Thunderdrum but more often than the Skrill and all non-starter-dragon eggs.
  • Are somewhat hard to steer due to the way their hit-box is set up.
  • Ties with the Thunderdum for being the cheapest of the member-only starter dragons to obtain at a cost of 300 gems (240 for members).

SkrillEdit

Pros:

  • Ties with a number of other dragons for having the second-fastest max flight speed in the game.
  • Are a fairly popular racing dragon.
  • Shows up in 170 and 250 coin chests at the same rarity as non-starter-dragon eggs.
  • At 750 gems (600 for members), the Skrill is the most expensive of the starter dragons to obtain.
  • Has a nice base pattern to work with.

Cons:

  • Low acceleration for flight.
  • The most commonly-chosen member-only starter dragon--if you're looking to be original the Skrill is not the way to go.
